Description

SYLLABUS
The Committee of Graduate Studies organizes since 2019 the graduate course HY500 "Introduction to Research", for 2 ECTS.
The course is year-long (2 semesters) and has a weekly, 2 hour lecture. Attendance is mandatory for all graduate students.
It includes 3 introductory lectures repeated at the start of every semester, on the methodology and the ethics of research, and the presentation of research results. These have to be only attended once each.
The remaining lectures will be offered by all members of the faculty and will be surveys of the corresponding research areas.
For a graduate student to complete the course and receive the ECTS credits, they will have to attend the three introductory lectures, and only miss up to two of the remaining lectures.

LEARNING OUTCOMES
1. Knowledge: Having attended the course, the student can describe the steps of the research process and issues of scientific ethics.
2. Understanding: Having attended the course, the student has understood the importance of ethical practices in science. He will also have understood the nature of the research problems of each area of specialization offered by the postgraduate program.
3. Application: Having attended the course, the student is able to make better presentations and speeches, choose the area (or areas) of specialization to pursue, as well as the courses to attend.
4. Analysis: Having attended the course, the student is able to evaluate his sources, and perceive the development of computer science and engineering as a synthesis of a series of individual subproblems.
5. Synthesis: Having attended the course, the student is able to combine what he has learned from this course in the process of preparing his master's thesis.
6. Evaluation: Having attended the course, the student is able to evaluate whether a presentation/talk is good and what is ethically correct.

STUDENT PERFORMANCE EVALUATION
Mandatory Attendance for 2 semesters, with absences recorded.
* Mandatory Attendance at the first 3 introductory lectures in 1 of the 2 semesters (without any absences).
* Mandatory Attendance for the remaining lectures (up to 2 absences per semester).
