A semantic based framework for managing, searching and retrieving 3D resources

Abstract

3D content plays a crucial role in intelligent digital content creation and consumption. Embedding semantics and domain knowledge in 3D-intensive applications can highly improve the re-use of valuable resources. Modelling the semantics of 3D resources constitutes a concrete step in developing an effective search mechanism. In this paper we present a knowledge-based approach to 3D resources management, search and retrieval, namely the Digital Shape Workbench framework and services developed within the AIM@SHAPE Network of Excellence. We focus on the ontology development rationale, the knowledge infrastructure and the search mechanisms developed.
